Manufacturing Month

Circuit boards, firetruck pumps, and cheese. What do these things have in common? How about microporous breathable film, sofas, and plastic automobile fasteners? Gaming carts for e-sports, extrusion dies, and beer? All of these are products made right here in Chippewa Falls. And while some of our manufacturing companies are locally owned and operated, others are part of international companies with one location here and others around the globe.

October is Manufacturing Month and we are celebrating the importance of manufacturing in our local area. Manufacturing serves as a powerful engine for job creation and economic growth, providing a diverse range of employment opportunities from entry-level positions to highly skilled technical roles. There is a wide range of career paths individuals can pursue including engineering, computer programming, sales and marketing, finance and accounting, in addition to carpentry, welding, machining, assembly work, and other skilled trades. The Manufacturing businesses that belong to the Chippewa Falls Area Chamber of Commerce employ nearly 4,500 people. These jobs often offer competitive wages and benefits, contributing to a higher standard of living for local residents. In addition, the economic impact of manufacturing extends far beyond employment.  As manufacturing workers spend their earnings locally, they support other businesses further stimulating the local economy.

Looking at the vast range of products that are made here, it is evident that our manufacturing base is diverse. This can be highly beneficial to our community for several reasons. When one sector experiences a downturn, others may remain stable or even grow, helping to maintain overall economic stability. This diversification provides a buffer against industry-specific shocks that could otherwise devastate a community reliant on a single manufacturer or industry. In addition, a mix of manufacturing businesses provides a more stable employment environment. Job losses in one sector may be offset by stability or growth in others, helping to maintain overall employment levels and consumer spending in the community.

Local manufacturers often become integral parts of the community, going beyond their economic contributions. Many engage in corporate social responsibility initiatives, supporting local charities, sponsoring educational programs, and participating in community events. This involvement strengthens the community and fosters a sense of unity and pride among residents.

So as we observe Manufacturing Month, let’s thank and support the wide range of manufacturing businesses in the Chippewa Falls area.  Thank you!
